Apple requires the renewal price to be the biggest number shown

Apple's own subscription documentation sets disclosure, grace-period and price-increase rules distinct from its general guidelines, verified.

The workload

Beyond the general in-app purchase rule covered elsewhere in this pack, Apple's own subscriptions documentation, retrieved 16 September 2026, sets specific disclosure rules for a purchase screen. Verified from the current text: the sign-up screen must show the subscription's name and duration, the 'full renewal price, shown clearly and prominently, and localized in available currencies,' and, in the purchase flow, 'the amount that will be billed must be the most prominent pricing element in the layout.' A free-trial screen must separately state how long the trial lasts and the price billed afterward. The workload is a layout audit against these named placement rules, not just a presence check.

What the documents show

Apple's text states that subscribers manage subscriptions through Apple's own system settings, where they can 'upgrade, crossgrade, or downgrade between subscriptions as often as they like'; a developer may also surface Apple's showManageSubscriptions method in-app instead of a custom cancellation screen, so Apple, not the developer, runs the cancellation mechanism. That differs structurally from the state and federal rules covered elsewhere in this pack, where the seller must build its own online cancel path. Apple's own Review Guidelines add, in section 3.1.2(c), that a developer 'should clearly describe what the user will get' before asking someone to subscribe. Enabling 'Billing Grace Period' in App Store Connect lets a chosen duration of 3, 16 or 28 days apply when a renewal payment fails, during which the subscriber keeps access while Apple tries to recover payment. This entry does not assert Apple wrote these rules in response to the FTC's or California's requirements; Apple's text states no such connection.

The operating cost

Apple states no separate fee for its subscription tools beyond the commission already covered under the general in-app purchase rule; the added cost is design labor to match Apple's placement rules, plus a one-time grace-period configuration choice. A larger price increase can require subscriber opt-in, while smaller, infrequent increases can produce notification alone, a distinction Apple does not quantify with a percentage or dollar threshold here.

The stop condition

Apple names no expiration on these disclosure rules; they apply to every live subscription continuously. This is verified, not editorial. The practical stop condition is a subscription's own end: once a plan is discontinued, the grace-period and disclosure rules stop applying to it, though the general accurate-metadata obligation continues until the listing itself is removed.

  • Is the full renewal price the visually largest element on the purchase screen, or does a discounted introductory number dominate the layout instead?
  • Which billing grace period, 3, 16 or 28 days, has actually been configured, and does it match the founder's own churn tolerance?
  • Does the free-trial screen state the post-trial price as clearly as Apple requires, separate from the trial-period messaging?

Apple's subscription rules are more prescriptive about layout than its general guidelines, verified from the prominence and grace-period language in Apple's own subscriptions page, and they hand the cancellation mechanism to Apple rather than the developer, a different design than the state and federal rules covered alongside them.
