Pinboard launched as a one-person, paid bookmarking site

Ceglowski's own pages date the 2009 launch and give current pricing, not audited revenue.

The workload

Pinboard was written, tested, and put on sale by one person. Its founder writes, self-reported on his own site, that he 'wrote Pinboard in the spring of 2009 as a personal project,' then 'invited volunteers to test the site in June of 2009, and started offering paid accounts in July,' according to the current About page. A separate, dated talk confirms the same sequence in the founder's own words: 'In 2009, when I started my own bookmarking site, called Pinboard, I really wanted to lure over fans with their amazing tag collections,' he told a 2013 conference audience. The workload the About page describes today is still one person; it names no other staff, and separately calls its technology choice, PHP and MySQL, deliberately unremarkable.

What the documents show

The About page, a living document retrieved 16 September 2026, states Pinboard's current pricing and scale in the founder's own words: $22 a year for basic bookmarking, $39 a year for archiving and full-text search, 'several hundred million bookmarks,' and 'about 30,000 active users,' all self-reported, with no independent audit named. A dated post on the Pinboard blog, signed 'maciej' on 9 July 2017, adds a self-reported revenue table running from $117,000 in 2010 to $259,000 in 2017, alongside a stated $0 in outside funding every year. The founder's own site gives his full name, Maciej Ceglowski. None of these figures are described as independently verified; they are self-disclosures, not aggregated with any other company's numbers here.

The operating cost

Pinboard's stated cost to a user is its published subscription price, $22 or $39 per year, per the current About page, with 'generous discounts' for multi-year sign-ups not itemized in dollars. What it cost Ceglowski to run the site in a given year is only partly disclosed: the 2017 post's revenue table names annual revenue but not annual expense, so a reader cannot derive a profit figure from what these two documents state. Finding an operating-cost figure would require a source Pinboard has not published, an expense breakdown separate from the revenue table already cited.

The stop condition

Neither source states a formal point at which Ceglowski would stop running Pinboard. The About page frames the $22/$39 pricing itself as the mechanism that has 'allowed Pinboard to operate independently and successfully since 2009,' implying continued subscriptions are the ongoing condition for staying open, but names no minimum subscriber count or revenue floor. Absent a stated threshold, the only defensible one here is editorial: a one-person paid service stops being viable once revenue no longer covers the founder's time and hosting costs.

  • Does a stated subscriber count of 'about 30,000' tell a reader anything about revenue without the price attached to it?
  • Is a multi-year, self-reported revenue table more or less reliable than a single year's figure?
  • What would it take to see Pinboard's expense side, not just its revenue side?

Pinboard's own pages are unusually candid for a one-person business, but they remain self-reported. The launch sequence and current price are stated plainly; the underlying cost of running the service for sixteen years is not.
