The workload
Since Paddle acquired ProfitWell, keeping a consistent set of SaaS metric definitions has meant checking which product name and URL currently host them, not just what the definitions say. Verified: the domain profitwell.com now redirects to paddle.com, and the metric definitions formerly published under the ProfitWell brand now live on Paddle's own SaaS metrics glossary, retrieved 16 September 2026. The free analytics product itself survives as ProfitWell Metrics, described on Paddle's page as "accurate, accessible revenue reporting for subscription and SaaS companies," still free, still tracking MRR, churn, lifetime value, and revenue per customer, and still benchmarking against what the page states are "30,000+ companies."
What the documents show
Verified: Paddle's own acquisition announcement, published 25 May 2022 by Paddle founder Christian Owens, states the deal was "valued at over $200m in cash and equity" and describes ProfitWell as "a Boston-headquartered subscription metrics software provider, founded in 2012 by Patrick Campbell," serving "over 30,000 businesses in more than 100 countries" at the time. Verified: Paddle's current glossary defines monthly recurring revenue as "the amount of money a business gets from its subscription customers that is recognized on a monthly basis"; churn as "the number of customers that stop doing business with you over a period of time"; and net revenue retention as how much recurring revenue from existing customers is retained over a period, including expansion revenue, distinct from gross revenue retention. These are Paddle's own current wording, current as retrieved, presented as vendor documentation rather than a standard set by any outside body, a distinction this entry preserves rather than treating Paddle's definitions as the only correct ones.
The operating cost
ProfitWell Metrics remains free to use, per Paddle's own product page, with no stated price. The definitions themselves carry no direct cost, but a founder who builds internal reporting on one vendor's specific wording for MRR or churn takes on a switching cost if that vendor's definitions diverge from another tool's, a cost the cited pages do not quantify and this entry does not estimate.
The stop condition
Editorial: the sources name no stop condition for using these definitions, since a glossary page persists until Paddle changes it. The practical marker is a re-check whenever Paddle materially updates the glossary or changes what ProfitWell Metrics tracks, since the product's ownership has already changed once, in 2022, and its scope could change again.
- Does the current Paddle glossary wording for a given metric match how this business's own dashboard calculates it?
- Is ProfitWell Metrics still free under Paddle, and does the stated benchmarking sample size still hold at the figure last checked?
- Where do the site's own metric definitions differ from Paddle's, and does that difference change a reported number?
A metrics glossary inherited through a 2022 acquisition is still, on the page itself, vendor documentation, useful as a common reference point, not a neutral standard, and worth rereading each time a founder's own numbers are checked against it.
