A software trade group's own materials say it began in 1984

The workload

Running the Software Publishers Association meant, in the trade body's own words, coordinating the business of representing PC software publishers: a 1996 SPA press release shows staff producing a quarterly software-sales research program, running an annual Codie Awards competition and symposia, and publishing member research such as a piracy-loss survey. Self-reported, in that release: SPA says it had grown to more than 1,200 members internationally by December 1996 and that its members accounted for 85 percent of the revenue in the U.S. packaged and on-line software industry, a claim the association makes about itself with no independent audit cited. A 1999 SIIA anti-piracy backgrounder states that program alone, inherited from SPA, already involved over 90 percent of SIIA member companies.

What the documents show

Verified, from SPA's own 1996 press release: its standard closing description states that, founded in 1984, the nonprofit Software Publishers Association had grown to become the principal software industry trade association. Verified, from SIIA's 1999 backgrounder: SPA merged with the Information Industry Association in January 1999 to form the Software and Information Industry Association, and SPA's anti-piracy program specifically began in 1985. Verified again, from a separate SIIA page, the 2004 history of the Codie Awards: it calls SPA the organization now known as SIIA. None of these documents is itself a contemporaneous 1984 charter or bylaws record; the 1984 date rests on SPA's own later self-description, so this entry treats the year as the association's own account rather than an independently verified incorporation date.

The operating cost

None of the three documents states a membership dues figure. SPA's release frames its scale in membership count and revenue share, not price; the 1999 backgrounder describes program participation, not a fee schedule. Establishing what a 1996 SPA membership actually cost would require a dues schedule or member application document, neither of which is among these sources.

The stop condition

SPA's identity as an organization did not end so much as change name: the 1999 backgrounder is explicit that SPA merged into SIIA rather than dissolving, and SIIA continues to operate its own current site, retrieved 16 September 2026, which lists a division structure but no founding date on that page. Editorially, the relevant stop condition for a solo software vendor weighing trade-association membership is not the association's survival, which these documents show has continued for decades under a changed name, but whether a specific division's programs still address a one-person publisher's own product category.

• Is a claimed founding year traceable to a document from that year, or only to the group's own later retelling?
• What does a trade group's self-reported membership share actually exclude, such as independent or shareware-only publishers?

SIIA's own documents establish a chain of identity from SPA in 1984, by its own account, through an anti-piracy program dated to 1985, to a merger with the Information Industry Association in January 1999, verified in the association's own materials. What they do not supply is a document contemporaneous with 1984 itself.
