The workload

Calculating sales tax and VAT correctly across many jurisdictions means tracking each state or country's registration threshold, applying the right rate for a given product category, and, in some cases, filing and remitting the collected amount, without misclassifying a digital product along the way. Verified: Stripe's Tax product page, retrieved 16 September 2026, states the product covers all 50 US states, where remote-seller registration thresholds vary from $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in most states to $500,000 in California, New York and Texas, and states international coverage of over 100 countries supporting more than 600 product tax categories.

What the documents show

Verified: Stripe's Tax documentation, also retrieved 16 September 2026, describes calculation and filing as distinct functions: it states Stripe Tax automates US sales tax filing directly from the dashboard, powered by TaxJar, and works with named partners Taxually, HOST and Marosa across more than 90 countries for filings outside the US. The documentation states Stripe Tax primarily calculates and collects taxes, with businesses retaining ultimate filing responsibility unless they separately use Stripe's merchant-of-record product, Stripe Managed Payments. That distinction matters: Stripe Tax calculating a correct VAT amount on a transaction is not the same as a merchant of record assuming legal liability for that tax, and the documentation does not conflate the two.

The operating cost

Verified: Stripe's Tax pricing page, retrieved 16 September 2026, states a pay-as-you-go tier called Tax Basic with no recurring fee, charging 0.5% per transaction where the seller is registered to collect tax through a no-code integration, or 50 cents per transaction through the API, with each API transaction including 10 calculation calls and additional calls billed at 5 cents each. A separate subscription tier, Tax Complete, is priced from $90 per month, covering 2 registrations, 200 transactions, 2,000 API calls and 4 annual filings, up to $1,500 per month for 10 registrations, 5,000 transactions, 50,000 API calls and 32 filings, on a stated one-year contract in US dollars.

The stop condition

This is editorial, since the documents describe tiers rather than a switching rule: the pay-as-you-go Tax Basic tier stops making sense once a seller's registration and filing count would exceed what a low Tax Complete tier bundles for a flat monthly rate, at which point the per-transaction percentage on rising volume likely costs more than the fixed subscription.

  • How many jurisdictions is the business actually registered in today, and does that match a specific Tax Complete tier's included count?
  • Is the no-code 0.5% rate or the 50-cent API rate cheaper at the business's actual average transaction size?
  • Does the business need calculation and filing only, or does its risk profile call for a merchant of record's liability transfer instead?

Stripe's own pages keep calculation, filing and liability transfer as three distinct claims, and pricing a tax solution correctly means matching the tier to which of those three a business actually needs.
